Last Monday, I went to the Benguet Capitol to cover the Provincial Board Meeting. It was my first covering the board meeting so I was very nervous and somehow clueless. Luckily, ate Annalyn, a SunStar intern under Ma'am Malen, was also there. I also met Sir Larry from Baguio Chronicle.

The meeting started a bit late. I got a copy of the meeting's agenda and I looked for an interesting story. Unfortunately, nothing was news worthy enough. However, vice-governor and presiding officer Crescencio Pacalso read the urgent request of governor Nestor Fongwan to approve the donation of Php 200,000 for the Pablo victims in Mindanao. I thought that it would be a good story.

In the afternoon, we went to the Municipal hall of La Trinidad to cover the Council Meeting. It was also my first time to actually cover the meeting. They didn't have a council meeting the last time I was there. I met Czar, my  classmate, and an intern of Baguio Chronicle under Sir Larry. She was there to cover the council meeting as well. Unlike in the board meeting, there were many interesting agendas in the council meeting, but Ma'am Malen said that she would do a story about those. She gave us another assignment, but the person who has the files and other information is suspended. I decided to pursue the story about the request to PCSO to donate ambulance units and medicines. I interviewed Hon. Horacio Ramos Jr. since he's the one wrote the resolution. He is very accommodating, and he answers well.

When I went home I sent Ma'am Malen the details of the Provincial Board Meeting and Council Meeting.

Today, when I woke up, I saw the text of ate Annalyn saying she saw my name in SunStar. I immediately checked the internet and to my surprise I saw the first article with my name. I am sharing the article with my supervisor Ma'am Malen, but I am still very happy to see my name.

Here is the full link to the article: http://www.sunstar.com.ph/baguio/local-news/2012/12/12/benguet-pitches-pablo-victims-258045. The online version of the story was published yesterday, but the article was published in SunStar Baguio today.

The Drug Rehabilitation Center Project in Irisan, Baguio City

Euphoria or being "high" is one of the immediate effects of crystalline methamphetamine, also known as Shabu or poor man’s cocaine. Shabu is one of the most common and widely used illegal drugs in the country, according to Asia and Pacific Amphetamine-Type Stimulants Information Centre (APAIC). It would only take a few minutes or hours for a user to feel high and full of energy, depending whether he/she swallowed, inhaled or injected the crystal meth. However, a few moments of heightened energy and happiness would eventually take its toll. In the long run, a shabu user would experience insomnia, anxiety, weight loss, hallucination, psychosis, violent behavior, kidney damage, and inflammation of the lining of the heart that might eventually result in death. The long-term effects of drug abuse are alarming not only for the users, but also for their family.   Source: The Sara Bellum Blog An edited effects on how drugs affect an individual's health

Phase1: Patience is a virtue

I was asked to cover the Adivay festival specifically, the horses and cowboys parade.            I have no idea what time the event will start, so I decided to come early to avoid the traffic, and to not miss the parade. Since there was no traffic, I arrived in Benguet Sports Complex at 8:20A.M. The parade haven't started yet and I thought I should visit the booths. Booths of the thirteen municipalities of Benguet showcasing and selling their products to visitors. The landscapes in front of the  booths are the entry of each municipalities for the best landscape contest.           Each 13 municipalities have their own booths showcasing their products. I was amazed with the beautiful landscapes and creative booths. I wanted to try their delicacies, but I didn't brought money with me. Here are some photos of the booths and  landscapes:           An hour passed and the still no parade. I visited the stalls selling snacks and woodcarvin

un-LAKE-ly view of Burnham Park

I would just like to share these pictures of the Burnham Lake minus the water.  Instead of boats, I found backhoe in the middle of the famous Burnham Lake. Instead of tourists admiring the cold weather, I saw workers busy clearing the man-made lake.      The clearing project of the Burnham aims to fix the flaws of the lake that was built during the American regime in the Philippines.     The boats were placed outside the lake, and was replaced with backhoes.     After draining the lake, tilapia, wallets, and cellphones were found at the bottom of the lake. The tilapia were given to the bystanders. Tourists and residents watch as workers clear the now muddy Burnham lake with backhoes.    The empty Burnham lake is expected to be refilled with water by January 25, in time for the Panagbenga Festival in February.
