Forthcoming: A Post Grad dilemma

One of the skills of a career woman is multi-tasking. Nowadays, things are moving in a fast pace. We should learn to do things at once. Source: http://careerm8.info/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Woman-multitasking-cartoon.jpg            Internship gives us a glimpse of what it is like in the "big world". It is a chance for us learn the know how and the ups and downs of our chosen career, and techniques that we could use in the future . For some, it is also a realization whether you really like to pursue your chosen career or if you are fit for job.       As I've mentioned in my previous blog entry, I successful finished my internship in Sun Star Baguio. Now, the question is "do I see my self working in mainstream Journ?" National Newspapers: PDI, Manila Bulletin, Phil. Star       During my internship, I realized that there are pros and cons working for a  newspaper. I find it difficult writi...

Closing Chapter

It's been a while since I finished my internship. Honestly, I was very anxious that I will not be able to finish my internship because I wouldn't be able to publish any articles. That is why it was such a relief for me to see my 8th and last article published in full page in Sun Star Baguio last Valentine's Day. Flowers of the North: My feature story published in Sun Star Baguio last February 14, 2013.     However, my feature story was also my first and only single byline that was published. According to my supervisor, I had three other single byline. Unfortunately, it did not see print for some reasons. Still, I am delighted to be able to publish, plus the three photos in the article is also mine.     It may not be a big deal to others, but I see it as an accomplishment and and a learning experience. Here is the link to my 7th and 8th articles: Valentine's Day doubles prices of flowers - http://www.sunstar.com...

Kapihan sa Jollibee

It is not part of my internship routine to attend 'Kapihan sa Baguio' since I am assigned in the Benguet Beat. However, my supervisor asked me to attend the said event today so I could gather more information about the article I am writing. from: http://stella-arnaldo.blogspot.com/2009/02/jollibee-invades-new-york.html     The topic of Kapihan sa Baguio is the on-going celebration of Panagbenga in Baguio. Of course, the flowers used in the festivity came from Benguet (which is my beat), and I am writing a feature article about flowers for Valentine's Day. And that is how I ended up in Jollibee Legarda right after my class.      The event went well and I was able to gather information through an interview with Mr. Anthony De Leon, co-chairman of the Executive Committee of Panagbenga 2013.     However, this coverage is different from my past coverage. If my article gets published and  the one ...

3-in-1 Flower Power

I've been having trouble with my schedule as I find myself with tons of school works lately. Time Management is something I'm still trying to figure out. Needless to say, I neither attended the Provincial Board Meeting nor the Municipal Council  Meeting. However, I still went to La Trinidad to interview some flower vendors for three purpose: For my BC 105 Field Reporting Class Business Beat -since Valentine's Day is just around the corner, customers are expected to flock flower shops For my Journ 107: Community Newspaper - Flower industry is quite popular in Benguet.  For my Journ 198 Internship - as I mentioned in my previous blog, I was assigned to write a feature article for Valentines, and the topic my supervisor gave me is, of course, FLOWERS! Even though I have quite a lot of work to do, I was able to find a way to finish three of them in one shot! 3-in-1 FLOWER POWER! ^_-

Another Intern Day

I've been busy with academic works that I wasn't able to attend the Provincial Board Meeting again. However, I went to the Capitol to gather information about the feature story I was working, but the officer said that I could get the information I want at the Municipal Hall. I went to the Municipal Hall, but the desk officer said that the office of the Municipal Agriculturist is located at the market. It was already quarter to two so I decided to talk to the agriculturist next time, and attend the Council Meeting for now.     I attended the Council meeting, however, they did not discuss the issues in the agenda. I told my supervisor that I would interview Coun. Awingan about the sisterhood relations of La Trinidad and Balbalan that she was working on, and she said okay.    Before the meeting ended, I was surprised when the wall started shaking. It was an earthquake! It was a short, but strong earthquake. Good thing, nothing bad happened. ...

Legwork, Interviews and more

I wasn't able to attend the Provincial Board Meeting last Monday due to academic reasons. Nevertheless, I went to the municipal hall in the afternoon to attend the Municipal Council Meeting. My supervisor, Ma'am Malen assigned the stories I need to write. She also gave me an assignment to write a feature for Valentine's Day. Red fresh strawberries in Strawberry Farm.     I was supposed to write a story about the proposed ordinance giving incentives to volunteers in La Trinidad, and about the preparation for the Strawberry Festival. However, the executive committee of the Strawberry Festival was not able to provide me information for the meantime.   I interviewed Councilor Awingan about the proposed ordinance that he sponsored together with Coun. Kipas. He asked if I can understand Ilokano and I said no. He jokingly said that he would have difficulty answering my questions. I also interviewed Councilor Shontogan about the illegal funeral parlor i...

un-LAKE-ly view of Burnham Park

I would just like to share these pictures of the Burnham Lake minus the water.  Instead of boats, I found backhoe in the middle of the famous Burnham Lake. Instead of tourists admiring the cold weather, I saw workers busy clearing the man-made lake.      The clearing project of the Burnham aims to fix the flaws of the lake that was built during the American regime in the Philippines.     The boats were placed outside the lake, and was replaced with backhoes.     After draining the lake, tilapia, wallets, and cellphones were found at the bottom of the lake. The tilapia were given to the bystanders. Tourists and residents watch as workers clear the now muddy Burnham lake with backhoes.    The empty Burnham lake is expected to be refilled with water by January 25, in time for the Panagbenga Festival in February.

Phase3: Legwork

Being assigned in the Benguet beat, Monday is a very important day. There is a heavy coverage every Monday, and the days to follow is for the reporter to work on the details of the stories. View of La Trinidad, Benguet from the balcony of the Capitol            It's been part of my weekly routine to attend the Provincial Board Meeting in the morning, and the Municipal Council Meeting in the afternoon every Monday.        There isn't much newsworthy stories in the agenda of the two meetings last Monday. In case there is, they usually wouldn't elaborate on the matter or put the issue for next week's agenda. I couldn't think of any stories to work on, but my supervisor, Ma'am Malen, attended the Board Meeting and asked me to what's my story? I immediately blurted about the mining issue I saw on the agenda though I'm not sure what it's about. She said okay and told...

Phase 3:The People

Provincial Board Meeting at the Capitol It's my third time covering the provincial board meeting at the Capitol in La Trinidad, Benguet. However, aside from the Board Members and Vice-Governor Pacalso, the new Provincial Director P/Sr. Supt. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. was also present. He discussed about the  checkpoints that would be set up as part of the election gun ban. The board members also asked him about his plans regarding some issues such as juvenile offenders, sex trades, and marijuana. The media people was able to interview him as he personally approached us. He think he is friendly and open-minded. I hope he does well. During the interview with PD Azurin, I also met Sun Star Baguio reporter Ma'am Ruby. She is the supervisor of Cyril Encarnacion.  In the afternoon, I attended the Municipal Council Meeting in La Trinidad. I was surprised to see that almost all the councilors were present. The last time I was there, Council Botiwey acts as the presiding officer an...

Phase3: Mayor's office

Today, I had my first assignment for 2013. My supervisor, Ma'am Malen, is on travel right now, and she asked me to do a news story about the status quo on taxes. I went to La Trinidad municipal hall to gather information. I am really glad that the staff are all friendly and approachable. I didn't had trouble getting information since they are all willing to help even though they are busy.      Aside from getting the information I need, I also learned the process and the requirements needed to get married. ^_^

Achievement Unlocked

Official Seal of Benguet Province source: http://upload.wikimedia.org/ wikipedia/en/8/80/PH_seal_benguet.png        Last Monday, I went to the Benguet Capitol to cover the Provincial Board Meeting. It was my first covering the board meeting so I was very nervous and somehow clueless. Luckily, ate Annalyn, a SunStar intern under Ma'am Malen, was also there. I also met Sir Larry from Baguio Chronicle.      The meeting started a bit late. I got a copy of the meeting's agenda and I looked for an interesting story. Unfortunately, nothing was news worthy enough. However, vice-governor and presiding officer Crescencio Pacalso read the urgent request of governor Nestor Fongwan to approve the donation of Php 200,000 for the Pablo victims in Mindanao. I thought that it would be a good story.       In the afternoon, we went to the Municipal hall of La Trinidad to cover the Council Meeting. It was also my first time to actually cover the me...

Phase1: Surprise, I'm a media intern!!

I was sent to cover the presentation of the draft of provincial communications protocol and early warning system at the Benguet Capitol last week. The presentation was set at 9 in the morning, but I came in late because I had a class until 10:00 A.M. plus the travel time took 30 minutes. Rosemarie Melencio from PDRRMO presents the communication protocol draft.    I was at lost when I came in. Since I was late, they were already at the second part of the presentation. Moreover, the presenter and the guests were speaking in English and Ilocano, I could not understand most of what they were saying since they mostly conversed in the dialect. After a few minutes, I finally picked up the flow of the discussion and was taking down notes. A guest asked me what company I was representing (in Ilocano so I had to ask him to speak in Tagalog) and I said I'm a SunStar intern. He was a little surprised. I was wondering why he why he such a reaction after h...

Phase 1: Empty Well, Empty Bucket

However, not all waiting ends well. Sometimes, even though no matter how long you wait, you will realize that you are waiting for nothing. And no, I am not talking about love.       I was sent to cover the council meeting in La Trinidad Municipal Hall. The council meeting was set at 2 in the afternoon. I had no idea where the council meeting would be or how it goes so I decided to come early and find out. I came at around 1:30 PM and ask the information desk of the municipal hall. She told me it was upstairs, but I couldn't find it. She didn't told me that I should use the stairs at the end of the hall, and what office I should go.       I went around the mu...

Phase1: Patience is a virtue

I was asked to cover the Adivay festival specifically, the horses and cowboys parade.            I have no idea what time the event will start, so I decided to come early to avoid the traffic, and to not miss the parade. Since there was no traffic, I arrived in Benguet Sports Complex at 8:20A.M. The parade haven't started yet and I thought I should visit the booths. Booths of the thirteen municipalities of Benguet showcasing and selling their products to visitors. The landscapes in front of the  booths are the entry of each municipalities for the best landscape contest.           Each 13 municipalities have their own booths showcasing their products. I was amazed with the beautiful landscapes and creative booths. I wanted to try their delicacies, but I didn't brought money with me. Here are some photos of the booths and  landscapes: ...

The Drug Rehabilitation Center Project in Irisan, Baguio City

Euphoria or being "high" is one of the immediate effects of crystalline methamphetamine, also known as Shabu or poor man’s cocaine. Shabu is one of the most common and widely used illegal drugs in the country, according to Asia and Pacific Amphetamine-Type Stimulants Information Centre (APAIC). It would only take a few minutes or hours for a user to feel high and full of energy, depending whether he/she swallowed, inhaled or injected the crystal meth. However, a few moments of heightened energy and happiness would eventually take its toll. In the long run, a shabu user would experience insomnia, anxiety, weight loss, hallucination, psychosis, violent behavior, kidney damage, and inflammation of the lining of the heart that might eventually result in death. The long-term effects of drug abuse are alarming not only for the users, but also for their family.   Source: The Sara Bellum Blog An edited effects on how drugs ...
